Nigeria has approved $3 billion to rebuild the Port Harcourt railway.

Nigeria will continue to implement a plan to repair the narrow gauge railway, which connects Port Harcourt on the Atlantic coast and Maiduguri on the Chadian border, about 1000 km away.
The plan was announced in September by transport minister Rotimi Amaechi. On Wednesday, he told reporters the project had been officially approved.
"The Federal Executive Council has approved the award of the contract for the restoration and reconstruction of Port Harcourt to the Maiduguri narrow gauge railway, including the new extension and transfer facilities," Amaechi said
He added that the committee also approved the construction of a deep-sea port in Bonnie and a railway industrial park in Port Harcourt.
The minister said the reconstruction would cost about $3 billion. The industrial park is expected to cost 240 million US dollars, and the port is expected to cost 480 million US dollars. The last two projects will be developed in the form of public-private partnerships, "at no cost to the federal government.".
Bonnie port will have a rail link to the Port Harcourt line. Other connection lines will be connected to Owerri, capital of IMO state, and kafanchan, Kaduna State.
In the past, the 1067mm gauge line between Port Harcourt and Maiduguri was known as the "east line". The total length of trunk line and branch line is about 3500 km. Before abandonment, it mainly depends on signal system.
